What does need attention is the inverter, the component most likely to fail first at roughly 10–15 years, and a habit of glancing at your monitoring app often enough to notice an output drop. A professional clean, roughly £100–£250 for a typical domestic array, earns its keep mainly on shallow-pitch or flat arrays, near the coast, under trees, or where birds have been busy.
That answer disappoints a certain kind of salesperson, which is why it's worth spelling out: what "maintenance" really means, when cleaning is worth doing, how to do it safely, what your installer is on the hook for, and a once-a-year checklist.
A solar PV system is closer to a fridge than a boiler. There is no service interval, no filters, no fluids. The panels are sealed glass-and-aluminium units bolted to rails, and the only part working hard is the inverter, which converts the panels' DC output into the AC your home uses. Maintenance, in practice, means four things:
Keeping trees cut back is the one genuinely preventive job. Shading costs far more output than dirt ever will, and a branch that has crept into view over five summers is easy to miss because it happened slowly. For most homes, no. Three things do the job for you: rain, spread through the year so dust and pollen rarely bake on; pitch, since a typical UK roof at roughly 30–45 degrees sheds water and loose dirt with it; and anti-soiling glass on most panels sold in the last decade.
The measured effect is small. Field studies in northern European climates generally put annual soiling loss on a pitched roof at roughly 1–5%, with the higher end concentrated in specific situations. For context, a 4 kWp system on a good roof generating roughly 3,400–4,000 kWh a year (real roofs typically make less, see solar output by area) would lose perhaps 40–200 kWh a year to dirt, a few tens of pounds at most. So the test for whether to clean is not "has it been a year?" but "can I see grime from the ground, or has the app dropped without a weather reason?"

Your installer's paperwork already covers much of what a maintenance contract would sell you. At handover, an MCS-certified installer should have given you a pack with your MCS certificate, electrical certificate, DNO notification, system schematic, the panel and inverter warranties, and a performance estimate for your roof. Keep it: the estimate is your baseline for spotting a real drop.
Alongside the manufacturers' cover, the installer provides a workmanship warranty, commonly two to ten years, often insurance-backed through a consumer code such as RECC or HIES. It covers faults in how the system was fitted: leaks around roof hooks, loose connections, chafed cabling, mounting that shifts. Call the installer, not a cleaner, for any of those, for an inverter fault code, or for output well below the performance estimate. On "annual service" offers: for a healthy system a few years old, most are unnecessary, and a paid visit rarely finds anything the app wouldn't have told you. A check earns its fee for older installs approaching inverter replacement age, after a serious storm or roof work, for a system inherited with no handover pack, or after a drop you can't explain. There, a one-off inspection by a local MCS installer, typically £100–£200, beats a standing contract.
