Very little. A pitched-roof solar array in the UK typically needs no scheduled maintenance at all: rain does most of the cleaning, soiling losses usually sit somewhere in the 1–5% range, and the panels have no moving parts to wear out. What does need attention is the inverter, the component most likely to fail first at roughly 10–15 years, and a habit of glancing at your monitoring app often enough to notice an output drop. A professional clean, roughly £100–£250 for a typical domestic array, earns its keep mainly on shallow-pitch or flat arrays, near the coast, under trees, or where birds have been busy.

That answer disappoints a certain kind of salesperson, which is why it's worth spelling out: what "maintenance" really means, when cleaning is worth doing, how to do it safely, what your installer is on the hook for, and a once-a-year checklist.

What "maintenance" actually means for a solar PV system

A solar PV system is closer to a fridge than a boiler. There is no service interval, no filters, no fluids. The panels are sealed glass-and-aluminium units bolted to rails, and the only part working hard is the inverter, which converts the panels' DC output into the AC your home uses. Maintenance, in practice, means four things:

  • Watching output. Every modern inverter has an app showing daily and monthly generation. A sustained drop the weather doesn't explain is the earliest sign of a fault, and a weekly glance catches it early.
  • Reading the generation meter. If you're paid for export, the meter is what gets you paid and what confirms the app is telling the truth. Compare the two once or twice a year.
  • Checking the inverter. A steady status light in daylight and no fault codes. It's also the part that wears out: expect one replacement over the system's life, covered in how long do solar panels last?, so we won't repeat the numbers here.
  • Looking at the roof from the ground. Once or twice a year: cracked glass, a panel at an odd angle, hanging cabling, nests, or moss along the bottom edge.

Keeping trees cut back is the one genuinely preventive job. Shading costs far more output than dirt ever will, and a branch that has crept into view over five summers is easy to miss because it happened slowly. Do solar panels need cleaning in the UK?

For most homes, no. Three things do the job for you: rain, spread through the year so dust and pollen rarely bake on; pitch, since a typical UK roof at roughly 30–45 degrees sheds water and loose dirt with it; and anti-soiling glass on most panels sold in the last decade.

The measured effect is small. Field studies in northern European climates generally put annual soiling loss on a pitched roof at roughly 1–5%, with the higher end concentrated in specific situations. For context, a 4 kWp system on a good roof generating roughly 3,400–4,000 kWh a year (real roofs typically make less, see solar output by area) would lose perhaps 40–200 kWh a year to dirt, a few tens of pounds at most. So the test for whether to clean is not "has it been a year?" but "can I see grime from the ground, or has the app dropped without a weather reason?"

When a professional clean is worth paying for

Some arrays do get dirty enough to matter, and the pattern is predictable:

  • Shallow-pitch and flat arrays. Below roughly 10–15 degrees, water pools along the bottom frame instead of running off, dirt collects in a band, and self-cleaning largely stops. On a flat roof or low-pitch extension, an occasional clean is a reasonable line in the budget.
  • Coastal homes. Salt spray dries to a haze rain doesn't fully remove; within a mile or so of the sea, a clean every year or two is common.
  • Trees overhead. Pollen, sap and leaf litter can coat panels from early summer to autumn.
  • Bird droppings. A single deposit casts a hard shadow, and on a string inverter system that can pull down the output of the whole string, not just one panel (see solar inverter types explained for why optimisers and microinverters shrug this off).

A professional clean of a typical 8–14 panel array typically costs £100–£250, depending on access, roof height and travel. Quotes vary, so get two. Many window-cleaning firms offer it with the water-fed poles they use on glass, which is the right kit.

How to clean solar panels safely, and what to avoid

If you decide to do it yourself, the rules are short and worth following exactly:

  • Work from the ground. A telescopic water-fed pole with a soft brush head reaches most two-storey roofs. If it doesn't, hire someone who can.
  • Use plain or deionised water. Deionised water leaves no mineral spots, which is why professionals use it, but tap water rinsed off properly is fine. No detergent or glass cleaner: residue attracts dirt and some chemicals attack the coating or edge seals.
  • Soft brush, gentle pressure, cool glass. Loosen, then rinse, early morning or on an overcast day; cold water on hot glass risks thermal shock.
  • No pressure washers, abrasives or solvents. A jet can force water past the edge seals and crack cells, and the damage voids most panel warranties; scourers scratch; vinegar and "solar cleaning fluids" add risk to a job water does alone.
  • Never walk on the panels, and never go up on a wet, icy or windy roof. Glass that briefly carries a person's weight can micro-crack, and micro-cracks grow. Ladder falls are the real risk here. If the job means leaving the ground, it means someone with the right access equipment and insurance.

Pigeons and the space under your panels

The gap between panels and roof is dry, sheltered and warm, and pigeons work that out quickly. A colony means droppings on the glass, nesting material blocking ventilation, and blocked gutters. The fix is a mesh barrier around the perimeter of the array, typically a few hundred pounds for a domestic roof, fitted as soon as birds appear rather than after they've settled in. Warranties, handover packs and "annual service" offers

Your installer's paperwork already covers much of what a maintenance contract would sell you. At handover, an MCS-certified installer should have given you a pack with your MCS certificate, electrical certificate, DNO notification, system schematic, the panel and inverter warranties, and a performance estimate for your roof. Keep it: the estimate is your baseline for spotting a real drop.

Alongside the manufacturers' cover, the installer provides a workmanship warranty, commonly two to ten years, often insurance-backed through a consumer code such as RECC or HIES. It covers faults in how the system was fitted: leaks around roof hooks, loose connections, chafed cabling, mounting that shifts. Call the installer, not a cleaner, for any of those, for an inverter fault code, or for output well below the performance estimate. On "annual service" offers: for a healthy system a few years old, most are unnecessary, and a paid visit rarely finds anything the app wouldn't have told you. A check earns its fee for older installs approaching inverter replacement age, after a serious storm or roof work, for a system inherited with no handover pack, or after a drop you can't explain. The once-a-year checklist

Everything above compresses into a short list, which is the point.

  • Check the app monthly. Compare this month with the same month last year. A drop of more than roughly 10–15% the weather can't explain is worth investigating.
  • Read the generation meter twice a year. Confirm it agrees with the app and that export payments match.
  • Look at the inverter. Steady status light, no fault codes, vents clear.
  • Walk round outside. Glass intact, panels aligned, no hanging cables, nests or moss line.
  • Check the trees. Anything new shading the array between about 9am and 3pm? Cut it back.
  • Decide on cleaning. Visible grime, coastal salt, pollen, bird mess or a low-pitch array: clean or book a clean. Otherwise, leave it to the rain.
  • File the paperwork. Handover pack, warranties, fault history and check dates, so a future claim or buyer has the record.

The short version: UK solar panels mostly look after themselves, the inverter is the part to watch, and cleaning is a response to a visible problem rather than a calendar event.
