Yes, solar panels can attract pigeons, and in UK towns and cities they often do. Once a pair settles in they are stubborn to shift. It is a local problem rather than a universal one. Plenty of suburban and rural arrays go twenty years without a bird underneath them. If your street already has pigeons on the ridges at dusk, assume they will find your panels within weeks; if it does not, you can reasonably wait and watch.

Why the gap under panels suits pigeons

On-roof mounting sits the panels on rails a hand's width above the tiles, for airflow. That gap ticks every box on a pigeon's list.

Proof at install time or retrofit?

If you are still choosing a system, decide now. Mesh fitted on installation day is the cheapest it will ever be: the scaffold is up, the installer is on the roof, and the clips go on before the last panel is fixed.   • Clear the debris once empty. Nesting material and guano come out by hand with gloves and a mask, and the area is treated with a biocide. Dried guano dust is the health risk, so wet it before sweeping.
  • Proof the same day. Pigeons return to a cleared roost within hours. Mesh goes on as soon as the cavity is clean or the job gets done twice.
