York gets solid daylight for the north of England, but it is also one of the most heritage-sensitive cities in the country, so planning is worth thinking about early:

• Historic core. York has an extensive central conservation area and a very high number of listed buildings inside the walls. Visible roof-mounted panels are tightly controlled there, so rear or less-visible slopes are often the route.
• Victorian terraces. Holgate, South Bank and The Groves have dense period terraces. Fine for solar, with the structural check mattering more on older roofs.
• Post-war suburbs. Acomb, Clifton and the outer estates have straightforward semis that are easy solar candidates.
• Coast excluded. The YO area reaches the coast, but Scarborough, Whitby and Bridlington are separate catchments and are not covered here.
