Terms and estimates.

Last updated: 29 October 2026.

This page covers two things: how to read the figures Solarable shows you, and the terms for using the site. Both are written in plain English. If anything is unclear, email hello@solarable.org.

Every figure is an estimate.

Every figure on a Solarable Report, in the savings calculator and on our local pages is an estimate from map and satellite data, not a roof survey. That includes the Solarable Score, roof direction, usable roof area, panel counts, annual generation, annual benefit and payback. We show ranges rather than single numbers because that is what the data supports.

Where satellite roof data is not available for a home we work from the building outline instead and assume a near-optimal roof pitch. Those estimates are deliberately wider and the report says so.

A free, no-obligation survey from an MCS-certified installer is the only way to confirm what your roof can do. Solarable helps you decide whether that survey is worth booking. It does not replace it.

The full method, assumptions and cross-checks are on How we measure.

Where the data comes from.

  • Roof and sun analysis includes solar data from Google (Google Solar API): roof segments, pitch and direction, annual sunlight and panel layouts. The imagery date for a specific home is printed on that home's report.
  • Roof shape where Google has no coverage comes from OpenStreetMap building data, © OpenStreetMap contributors.
  • Seasonal yield comes from PVGIS v5.2, published by the European Commission's EU Science Hub. In the United States we use NREL PVWatts v8 instead.
  • Address data comes from Ordnance Survey's OS Places API and Postcodes.io. In the United States it comes from Geocodio.
  • Installer data comes from the installers themselves and from the public MCS register. See How we vet installers.

Each source carries its own licence and its own limits. We refresh cached results on a schedule rather than live, so a figure can lag a source by a few weeks.

Using the site.

Solarable is a roof check tool with a paid installer directory, operated from the United Kingdom. By using solarable.org you agree to these terms.

Information, not advice. Reports, calculators and guides are general information to help you decide whether to speak to an installer. They are not financial, structural or legal advice, and they are not a quotation. Decisions about your home, and any contract you enter with an installer, are yours.

Accuracy. We work hard to keep figures honest and sources current, but estimates built from third-party data can be wrong for an individual roof. We cannot promise that any figure is complete, accurate or up to date, and to the extent the law allows we are not liable for decisions made on the strength of an estimate.

Fair use. The site is for homeowners checking their own roof, and for installers managing their own listing. Automated or bulk lookups, scraping, and reselling our output are not permitted without written agreement.

Content. Text, design and the Solarable name and marks belong to Solarable. You may share a link to any page, and share your own report. Third-party data stays subject to its own licence (see "Where the data comes from").

Installers and quotes.

Installers in the directory are independent businesses. "Listed" means the installer holds an MCS certificate that we have checked against the register and has met the directory's criteria. It does not mean we have inspected their work, and it is not a recommendation to hire them. Any survey, quotation or contract is between you and the installer.

Installers pay to be listed, and cards marked Featured are paid placement.

If you ask for quotes through a Solarable Report, your request is shared with at most three MCS-certified installers covering your postcode district, who pay us a fixed fee for the introduction. The full terms of that consent, and how to withdraw it, are in the privacy notice.
