By the numbers
Typical yearly generation, per kW of panels
≈922 kWh per kWp a year — roughly 5% below the UK average
For every kilowatt of panels, a well-placed Belfast roof generates about this much a year. Your own total depends on roof direction, pitch and shading — the roof check estimates it for your address.
How the sun falls across the year
Sunlight peaks in summer and dips in winter — a system is sized for the whole year, not just the peak. Estimated from PVGIS climate data for your postcode area; a roof survey confirms your exact figure.

Local context
Belfast sits at a similar latitude to northern Britain, so modern panels make solar worthwhile here. But Northern Ireland works differently from Great Britain, and that is worth understanding before you start:
Grants & support
Solar and battery installations across the UK are currently zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027 — a straight saving on the installed price for every household, with no application needed. Northern Ireland works differently from Great Britain. The GB ECO4 scheme does not run here; support has instead come through NI-specific programmes such as the NI Sustainable Energy Programme and the Affordable Warmth scheme, run through your local council and NI Direct. Export payments also differ, because the GB Smart Export Guarantee does not apply in NI, so it is worth checking directly what your electricity supplier pays for power you export.
Eligibility for grant schemes depends on your income, home and circumstances, and the schemes change. We keep the current picture on one page rather than guess what you'll qualify for.
Common questions
Most domestic installations are permitted development under Northern Ireland’s own planning rules, which are administered by your local council and differ from the England and Wales systems. Conservation areas and listed buildings can need consent for visible panels. A local installer will know the current position, and an installer survey confirms suitability first.
Northern Ireland is not part of the GB Smart Export Guarantee. Instead, NI electricity suppliers offer their own arrangements for power you export to the grid, and terms vary between suppliers. It is worth comparing what is available before you install, and an MCS-certified installation is normally required to qualify.
Belfast prices are broadly in line with the UK, though local supply and shipping can affect them. A typical 4 kWp system lands in roughly the £4,800 to £6,800 range installed, with battery storage adding around £3,000 to £6,000. Solar and battery are zero-rated for VAT until 2027 across the UK, and the on-roof survey gives the firm figure.
This page covers Greater Belfast, the metropolitan area including the city, Lisburn, Newtownabbey, Bangor, Newtownards, Carrickfergus and Holywood. The BT postcode covers all of Northern Ireland, so the rest of the province is kept separate.
